🐷Why CVC Words?
The first type of words that kids learn to read is called CVC words. This stands for Consonant Vowel Consonant and they're the easiest to sound out.
 
🐷Why? In CVC words each letter has its own sound and can be clearly sounded out and then blended to read the whole word. Easy Peasy! By having your child learn these words when they first start to read (ages 6 or older), you are setting them up for success in developing a strong foundation of reading skills!
 
🐷Use these kindergarten CVC worksheets to help students learn their short vowel i sound! Use the activities as beginning/middle/end-of-year check-ins for how your students are reading, or PARENTS use these at home to help your child maintain their English skills!
 
🔤The activities focus on letter-sound and sound-letter correspondence using orthographic mapping and are based on the Science of Reading and the Simple View of Reading principles :) Have fun learning English🤓!
 
🔍The Science/Research:
It takes students HUNDREDS of exposure to LEARN the letters and their names/sounds! HUNDREDS! And for students who are exposed to more than one language or may have an underlying language disorder, this may take even more exposure to remember them! So, the more practice they have the better readers they will become! :)

Repeat Use: Laminate or put in a page protector for repeated uses
Centers/Stations: Place at a center or station in your classroom
HOME PRACTICE OVER HOLIDAYS: Send home for students to practice over holiday breaks so they don't forget this information!
Make it FUN: Use letter stickers, letter stamps, dry-erase markers, etc. to write and color and make it fun

Read and Match
Cut out each picture at the bottom to practice hand-eye coordination. Then, paste the picture to match each word at the top. Have students sound out each sound in each word to read the words aloud. This focuses on letter-sound correspondence.
Read, Color, and Match
The same as above but the pictures are BW so the students can color them first :) Cut out each picture at the bottom to practice hand-eye coordination. Then, paste the picture to match each word at the top. Have students sound out each sound in each word to read the words aloud. This focuses on letter-sound correspondence.
CVC Words - Write it
Have students sound out each letter as they trace then write the words. This focuses on letter-sound correspondence. Then, they can color the pictures :)
Read, Find, & Color
Have students sound out each letter as they read the words. and then find the pictures below. This focuses on letter-sound correspondence as well as visual tracking. Then, they can color the pictures :)
CVC Words - Build it
Have students say the name of the picture out loud "cop" and then spell the words using letter magnets/stickers/markers/etc. This focuses on orthographic mapping and will strengthen sound-letter correspondence (the opposite of letter-sound correspondence). In this process, they rely on the sounds to then find the correct letters to spell the words. This process is necessary and important to build a strong reading foundation!
BONUS: Fill it In
Students should sound out each vowel to determine which vowel goes with which word. This focuses on letter-sound correspondence.
